In a joint effort as part of the second annual RBC Run for the Kids, Perry Dellelce, managing partner at Wildeboer Dellelce LLP, and David Allgood, ex- ecutive vice president and gen- eral counsel at the Royal Bank of Canada, spearheaded a campaign challenging law firms to com- pete in the event in order to raise money for the Family Navigation project at Sunnybrook Hospital. The project, which began last year with funding from the inaugural RBC Run for the Kids, aims to help youth and children affected by mental illness and addictions to get the help they and their families need. Since its launch, more than 300 families have benefited from it. Dellelce and Allgood aimed to raise $100,000 for the project and began contacting law firms to participate in the challenge. The response they received, according to Dellelce, was overwhelming. "We had 222 participants from 12 law firms. Lawyers and other members of staff came together and we ended up rais- ing $250,000," he says. The participating firms, be- sides Wildeboer Dellelce, in- cluded Baker & McKenzie LLP, Dentons Canada LLP, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, Nor- ton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, Goodmans LLP, Groia & Co. PC, McMillan LLP, Osler Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, Pace Law Firm, Stikeman Elliott LLP, and Thornton Grout Finnigan LLP. The campaign included track- ing donations online to see how much each law firm had contrib- uted in advance of the run. Over- all, the run raised $1.7 million, all of which will go towards the Family Navigation project. "Everyone was enthusiastic about it," says Dellelce of the feedback from participants. "They're all looking forward to doing it again. It was exciting for people and a lot of fun," he adds. Cheering the runners on from the sidelines were top Ca- nadian Olympic athletes like figure skater Patrick Chan, gymnast Jason Burnett, and retired hockey players Kendra Fisher and Jennifer Botterill. The race began and finished at Mel Lastman Square in North York. Runners could choose between distances of five, 15, and 25 kilometres. Dellelce, who participated in the five- kilometre run with his wife and children, described the event as exhilarating. "It was especially great to see law firms come together for a great cause," he says. The ceremony included the awarding of an honorary doctor of laws degree by the Law Society of Upper Canada to Kim Pate, executive director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies. "Her work has resulted in positive social change to marginalized women in Canadian society and progressive reforms to the criminal justice system," said law society Treasurer Janet Minor in announc- ing the honour to Pate. The legal community helped raise $250,000 through the law firm challenge organized as part of the RBC Run for the Kids last week. L
