Law TiMes • March 29, 2010 Vancouver event includes task force report on financial crisis NEWS Lawyers gearing up for IBA BY ROBERT TODD Law Times I nternational Bar Associa- tion president Fernando Peláez-Pier says Canadian lawyers would be wise to pack their bags and head to Vancou- ver this fall. Peláez-Pier was in Toronto last week meeting with part- ners at large fi rms in the city to promote the IBA's annual con- ference, which will take place in Vancouver from Oct. 3-8. He also spoke at a session of the semi-annual meeting of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada earlier this month. Peláez-Pier, who is the leading corporate partner at Venezuela's Hoet Peláez Castillo & Duque law fi rm, says the conference off ers lawyers the opportunity to attend more than 150 sessions on various aspects of the practice ClAriFiCATiONS A March 15 article, "Torys launches iPhone application," incorrectly identifi ed the fi rm that developed the product as U.S.-based 80/20 Group LLC. In fact, Toronto-based EightyTwenty Group Inc. designed it. Last week, an item in the Inside Story column said a Law Society of Upper Cana- da disciplinary ruling includ- ed the disbarment of Toronto lawyer Edmond Patrick An- drade. While it found him to have engaged in professional misconduct, it has given him 30 days to surrender his li- cence. If he fails to do so, the law society will disbar him. See you April 12 Due to the upcoming holiday, Law Times will not publish in print next week. We will return on April 12, 2010. Meanwhile, enjoy fresh content on our web site at: www.lawtimesnews.com The Ontario Municipal Service Directory: A Comprehensive Guide for Real Estate Professionals, 2010 of international business law led by top practitioners from around the globe. But on top of that, he stresses, it's a top-notch networking event. "It would be a great op- portunity for the Canadian legal profession to be ex- posed to the international legal profession," he says. "We are expecting similar numbers as in our previ- ous conferences — around 5,000 lawyers from all over the world." Lawyers at the confer- ence will also be interested in hearing results from the IBA's task force on the fi - nancial crisis. Th e task force, of which Peláez-Pier is a member, is expected to issue proposals for changes to regulatory rules that may have contributed to the collapse of global mar- kets. While the report is far from complete, Pe- láez-Pier says it's clear that lawyers across the globe have in some way been aff ected by the fi nancial crisis. "Th is has forced us to review the model of our practice, as it forced law fi rms to re- view their expenses, to focus more on those expenses that were necessary for the fi rm, and disregard superfl u- ous or unnecessary ex- penses," he says. But the crisis has 'it would be a great opportunity for the Canadian legal profession to be exposed to the international legal profession,' says Fernando Peláez-Pier. not been all bad for lawyers, notes Peláez- Pier. While banking, real estate, and fi nan- cial services lawyers took a hit, those specializing in labour, tax, and bankruptcy litigation fl ourished when the markets crashed. "One thing compensated the other," Peláez-Pier says. Th e IBA has vastly expanded since being established in 1947. It now boasts a membership of more than 35,000 individual lawyers and 197 bar associa- tions and law societies world- wide. Canadian lawyers have played an active role in the or- ganization's development, with more than 1,000 now holding IBA membership.
