6 December 2016 top newsmakers FOLLOWING HER ROLE in the Jian Ghomeshi trial, criminal lawyer Marie Henein became a household name. And those who speak her name haven't always done so kindly. A er successfully representing former CBC Radio host Ghomeshi against sexual assault allegations in the high-profi le trial that began in February of this year, Henein has been the target of plenty of outrage over Ghomeshi's eventual acquit- tal on March 24. She was accused of betraying women, being anti-feminist and has been called a traitor, but throughout the process, Henein maintained justice was served in the case and she challenged those opinions by countering that male lawyers don't face the same criticism. e personal attacks and negative treatment she received in the wake of the trial opened up a wider public discussion on the role of women in the law and as professionals overall. Media coverage of Henein o en involved descriptions and criticisms of her appearance, including much ink spilled over her shoes. e very public case she was defending also heightened the level of examination of the way sexual assault trials are conducted. Law Times reported the a ermath of the trial impacted the way labour and employment lawyers are con- sulted, and it spurred on discussion around Bill 132, which lays out stricter standards on how employers must conduct investigations a er concerns of workplace harassment come to light. Henein's place as a well-respected member of the bar who mentors many young women, particularly in the male- dominated criminal bar, has been cemented. Recent speaking engagements have drawn hundreds of attendees to be inspired and hear her war stories. Henein has used her platform to contribute to the conversation surround- ing women in the workplace generally and the legal profession specifi cally. She also recently wrote an opinion piece for e Globe and Mail called " ank you, Hillary. Now women know retreat is not an option." She again broached the subject of women in roles of power, and urged young women to partici- pate and engage until seeing them in every political party, in every profession, in the highest offi ce anywhere is so com- monplace it's not remarked on even to be celebrated.
