Th e province also announced that Legal Aid Ontario chair- man John McCamus would lead the fi ve working groups that will help decide where the funds will go. Linden was called to the bar in 1966 and remained in private practice until 1980. After that, he spent fi ve years as the fi rst police complaints commission- er for Toronto and chairman of the police complaints board. He then became executive director of the Canadian Auto Workers prepaid legal services plan be- fore moving on to the role of Ontario's fi rst information and privacy commissioner. He became the Ontario Court of Justice's chief judge in 1990 and then served as chairman of the board of LAO until taking on the role of commissioner of the Ipperwash inquiry. But Linden has his work cut out for him in pleasing the dif- ferent sides of the legal aid bar. Lenny Abramowicz, executive director of the Association of Community Legal Clinics of Ontario, tells Law Times that the funds must make a direct impact on the lives of those in need. "What we want to make sure the money doesn't get spent on are wasteful things," he says. "Th ings that look good, have bells and whistles, but don't re- ally help people."
